A story between a mole in the police department and an undercover cop. Their objectives are the same: to find out who is the mole, and who is the cop.

Directed by Wai-Keung Lau and Alan Mak, this turnabout thriller stars Asian heartthrobs Tony Leung and Andy Lau (Luu Duc Hoa) as mutual infiltrators: one an undercover cop deep inside a Hong Kong drug gang. And the other a member of that same gang posing as a rising police bureau official.

Veteran cop Chen Wing Yan has been so deep undercover for the past ten years that no one even knows his identity anymore. And Lau Kin Ming, a lieutenant in Hon Sam's drug-smuggling network, not only passed entry level training in the Hong Kong Police Bureau. He has risen through the ranks to the status of detective. Both sides are aware that there is an infiltrator in their midst. But their identities have been kept so secret that they are unknown to all except each infiltrator's superior. Police Chief Wong Chi Shing and drug lord Hon Sam.

When Sam's drug deals and Chief Wong's drug busts begin to go awry. Both Yan and Lau are dispatched to sleuth out their respective infiltrators. Each knowing that he himself is the one being sought, yet each still unknown to the other. But it's only a matter of time until things fall apart and the two come face to face.

Known in Chinese as Mou Gaan Do. Infernal Affairs is the same crime thriller (phim hinh su) that inspired director Martin Scorsese's English-language remake, The Departed, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, and Jack Nicholson in the roles of their Asian counterparts. And in much the same way that The Departed swept the Academy Awards, Infernal Affairs swept film awards at festivals across Asia.

ESPN announcer and former Yankee Alex Rodriguez and actress Jennifer Lopez are among the bidders angling for the New York Mets, according to reports.

Rodriquez and Lopez have put together a financial consortium to make a bid on the National League Team, which is being sold by the Wilpon family. The bankers handling the sale set a Thursday deadline for interested parties to submit a bid, and reports indicated the Lopez/Rodriguez team were among those who got one in.

Lopez and Rodriguez were both born in New York City, adding to their appeal as baseball owners.
The New York Post reports Lopez/Rodriguez offered $1.7 billion. The owners of the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA and the NHL’s New Jersey Devils, Josh Harris and David Blitzer, also submitted a bid.

Hedge fund manager Steve Cohen, who made a $2.6 billion bid earlier this year but backed out over control issues, reportedly also submitted another offer.

The opening round offers will now be evaluated by the Wilpons, who reportedly hope to close a deal by the fall and gain Major League Baseball approval for the new owners before the end of the year.

Viola Davis & Julius Tennon’s JuVee Productions Inks Expanded TV & Film Deal With Amazon Studios

Viola Davis and Julius Tennon’s JuVee Productions is staying in business with Amazon Studios. The company has expanded its exclusive first-look deal to include television, in addition to extending its film deal. As part of the new pact, JuVee will continue to develop and produce features as well as television series to premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video, in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.

“We are excited to continue our partnership with Amazon Studios, bringing our TV division along with Film,” said Davis and Tennon. “Our mission and the importance of being given an opportunity to be seen and occupy space is our legacy. JuVee’s collaboration with Amazon is one of shared vision and shared courage.”

JuVee’s previous TV home was at ABC Studios, producer of the Davis-starring How To Get Away With Murder, which wrapped its sixth and final season in May.

JuVee currently has two television projects and three films in development with Amazon Studios, including an adaptation of Octavia Butler’s beloved Wild Seed, based on the first book in Butler’s acclaimed Patternist sci-fi series, and a series adaptation of the film Fast Color. JuVee also previously sold projects to ABC, HBO, Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+, USA, TV One, Food Network and Bravo.

“Amazon has established itself as a home for artists who are passionate about changing the way that creative content looks and the stories that it tells,” said Andrew T. Wang, JuVee’s Head of TV Development and Production, “We are thrilled to bring JuVee into Amazon’s family of storytellers and to continue in our mission to provide a platform for compelling, original stories told by people from historically marginalized populations.”

In addition to Wang, JuVee’s team includes Rob Williams who will continue to serve as SVP of Features. Josh Nelson is Head of Interactive and Immersive. Karen Frost and Liliana Granados have been promoted to Creative Executives, TV and Film, respectively.

“With Amazon’s unparalleled global reach, these stories have the potential to impact, and enrich the lives of, audiences around the world,” Wang added.

As previously announced, JuVee’s Sundance award-winning documentary Giving Voice will premiere on Netflix, and Davis is set to go into production on Showtime’s First Ladies, portraying Michelle Obama.

JuVee’s additional television and film credits include ABC’s The Last Defense, Bravo’s In a Man’s World and the documentary Emanuel, which honored the Charleston Massacre victims. JuVee also executive produced “The March,” a first of its kind immersive exhibit that recreates the iconic 1963 March on Washington in virtual reality.

“Viola, Julius and Andrew are incredible talents, both on screen and off, with an eye for sourcing and developing authentic voices and stories.” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. “We share a vision and passion to serve our diverse global customers original content that inspires, entertains and brings people together. Sometimes a disaster doesn’t just happen on its own. There can be extenuating circumstances which happen outside of human control, but this doesn’t automatically mean that events have to spiral out of control and cause complete catastrophe.

Unfortunately, the Kursk: The Last Mission (Kursk: Chien Dich Tau Ngam) submarine disaster in 2000 was pretty much the perfect example of everything going completely wrong at the same time, as well as being subject to really bad judgment calls by the people in charge. But in some ways, when a disaster is this spectacular. It's pretty fascinating to delve into the murky depths of why. How and what really happened. Acclaimed director Thomas Vinterberg (Far from the Madding Crowd, The Hunt) was given the task of bringing this retelling to life and to represent the people who were involved. Including the men on board and their families left behind on shore.

The Kursk was a Russian nuclear submarine taking part in a routine military exercise when a series of huge explosions ripped it apart, sending it to the bottom of the sea with the men still trapped inside. Mikhail Kalekov (Matthias Schoenaerts). One of the officers on board, finds himself stranded with 22 other men in a compartment. Somehow still mostly intact but with oxygen rapidly running out. He convinces the men to put their faith in the Russian Navy, urging them to believe everything is being done to rescue them. And so they wait, in the dark at the bottom of the sea. But although the accident has been reported straight away. The Navy stalls, unsure whether or not anyone has been left alive.  There is also a dire lack of equipmen. And the technology they do have is woefully inadequate to the task.

It is a film that will stay with me for a long time to come.

As the situation worsens and the Navy are pushed into action, other countries. Including Norway and Britain come forward offering to help. But once again, there are obstacles. Cold War angst still poisons relations between the different governments and Admiral Grudzinsky (Peter Simonischek) is ordered to unequivocally refuse all assistance. Meantime, back on land, the families of all the men trapped on the submarine are being kept in the dark about what is really going on.  Mikhail’s wife (Léa Seydoux) starts realise what is happening which leads her to start questioning the judgement and integrity of the apparently paralysed and apathetic people in charge.

It’s a heavy drama (phim chieu rap) that is furthered burdened by it being based on a true story. But it is a story that needs to be told. With excellent performances from Seydoux, Schoenaerts and also Colin Firth - who plays British Commodore David Russell. One of the men involved in the rescue mission. It is a story told well, with a great deal of passion and heart. And the action was truly gripping, in a terrifying cross between The Poseidon Adventure and Deepwater Horizon. It is a film that will stay with me for a long time to come.

‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ UK Shoot On Track in Week One; Universal Says No Disruption After Reports Of Positive COVID Tests

The eyes of the film biz are trailed on Universal’s Jurassic World: Dominion UK shoot right now as the studio attempts to answer the burning question – how do you stage a blockbuster-size production safely in the pandemic era?

We had the scoop back in June that Uni was setting up its dinosaur sequel for resumption at the UK’s Pinewood Studios from July 6 after it was put on hiatus in mid-March. The extensive plans involved a spend of around $5M on safety protocols, included in which were thousands of virus tests for cast and crew.

The shoot is now into day five, and the studio tells us progress is going well, despite reports in UK press overnight that there could be disruption caused by positive virus tests among the crew. Uni has debunked those stories and told Deadline there won’t be any delay. “Any reports indicating that Jurassic World: Dominion has halted production are categorically untrue,” a spokesperson confirmed.

I understand that there have been no positive virus tests on set, and any positive results, which the studio wouldn’t confirm, will have been on crew prior to arriving at the Pinewood lot. The extensive protocols put in place mean those cases could have been detected on workers who were yet to join up with the production, meaning they won’t have come into contact with anyone else and can now isolate.

Realistically, on a production of this size, with the sheer number of crew required, positive virus tests were at least likely if not inevitable. While the UK is relaxing its lockdown, there are still pockets of the country where cases are spiking. Widespread testing is available, but in the grand scheme of things few people are getting regular checks outside of key workers. The country has recorded close to 300,000 cases to date, and that’s likely to be the tip of the iceberg considering the amount of people who don’t display any symptoms.

For now, Jurassic World: Dominion remains on track, though this is going to be a lengthy process with only four of 20 planned shooting weeks wrapped pre-lockdown. We’ll keep you posted.

‘Greyhound’ Review: Tom Hanks Back In Hero Mode In Exciting And Inspiring World War II Story

“Old fashioned” is a term that can be used in a non-flattering way, but in describing Tom Hanks’ new World War II film, it is a compliment. In terms of a genre that has been done repeatedly since, and during, that immortal conflict itself, it is hard to think of a way to bring any new light to it. Greyhound, a fictional story based on C.S. Forester’s 1955 novel, doesn’t rewrite the book on WWII but still does it proud and in the process uses CGI and special effects to tell the tale in as modern a way as possible visually.

At its heart, however, it is an understated and stoic performance by Hanks — who also adapted the book and whose company Playtone is a production entity — that reminds of the best we can be when duty calls, rather than the worst, as our current leaders seem to remind us each and every day. It was indeed the “greatest generation” at work to save the union and the world, and old fashioned or not, it is something we can hang on to, an inspiring message at a time when we need to hear one.

Sony Pictures originally planned an early-summer theatrical release for Greyhound, but instead, due to theater closures because of the coronavirus, sold it to streamer Apple TV+ in a reported $70 million-plus deal. It looks onscreen like an expensive film, and I dearly wish I could have seen it with all the bells and whistles a fully equipped movie theater could have provided rather than fighting my own battle with a buffering video link. That it was as impressive even under those viewing circumstances is a tribute to the filmmakers, including director Aaron Schneider, an Oscar winner for the live-action short Two Soldiers, making him a good choice to steer this ship.

Hanks plays Commander Ernest Krause, who at the beginning of the war suddenly finds himself with the difficult task of guiding  one of four ships leading a convoy of 37 merchant vessels loaded with crucial cargo through the North Atlantic to England. Stormy seas and gray weather aren’t all that these men have to endure, there’s also the fact that sophisticated German U-boats look at this as an opportunity to come out of nowhere and attack without a moment’s notice. It is the ultimate cat-and-mouse game, but the stakes are as high as they get. And even though this is a fictional story, just as Hanks’ other WWII role in Saving Private Ryan was, it is very authentic to similar crossings during the war, which sadly led to more than 72,000 casualties on our side.

Krause is a man who clearly, just by the expressions on his face, knows the weight of the assignment he has been handed. It helps that he is a man of deep faith and belief in God, and this is the rare movie outside the faith-based genre that shows a hero praying.

Those prayers are needed as Krause navigates this ship through what is known as the “black pit,” about as frightening a voyage imaginable. Although this aspect of the war might not have gotten as much attention, it makes for a very cinematic experience and, because of modern technology, is wildly more sophisticated than movies made during the war like Humphrey Bogart’s 1943 Action in the North Atlantic could be, despite their patriotic and entertainment value. The cinematography of Shelly Johnson is superb, and there are plenty of nail-biting moments, including near collisions in the crowded seas, that make this a perfect summertime action picture. Much of it is focused on the interiors (shot on a Louisiana sound stage),  but isn’t nearly as claustrophobic as some other movies set in the same sphere like Wolfgang Petersen’s superb six-hour sub picture Das Boot.

As for the cast, there is only one woman on view and that is an early scene with Elisabeth Shue as Krause’s girlfriend, as they meet and she rebuffs his attempt to become engaged before taking off on this mission. She wants to wait because she fears she might never see him again. It is a scene totally devoid of the clichés of the genre and one that brings the fear home in a way I haven’t quite seen. Stephen Cole, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and even Hanks’ son Chet pop in an out, and perhaps most memorably Rob Morgan as a messmate who brings Krause dinners that often go uneaten. Their interplay in quiet moments is effective, if brief.

This film, though, belongs lock stock and barrel to Hanks, who never goes for the showy moments. Add it to the list of compelling heroic characters, most real-life people, he has been drawn to like Sully Sullenberger, lawyer James Donovan in Bridge of Spies, Ben Bradlee in The Post, Captain Richard Phillips, astronaut Jim Lovell in Apollo 13, and most recently Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood — all men who promote the good in human beings. There is unquestionably a reason Hanks has so often been called this movie generation’s Jimmy Stewart.

He is also to be congratulated for telling these heroic WWII stories, even as a producer, with projects like Band of Brothers and The Pacific. And again, though fictional in story, the authentic documentary footage of similar crossings is a very sobering reminder during the closing credits that Greyhound has its own foot in real-life heroism.

Gotham City has a new Caped Crusader in town. God Friended Me actress Javicia Leslie has been cast as the new Batwoman lead. Replacing Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane in season 2 of the CW series. Leslie, who will be the first Black actress to ever portray Batwoman in live-action, will be playing a new character named Ryan Wilder.

Warner Bros. Television, The CW, and Berlanti Productions announced Wednesday that Javicia Leslie has been cast as the new Batwoman.

Leslie, who starred for two seasons on the CBS drama series God Friended Me, the BET drama The Family Business, as well as the feature film Always a Bridesmaid, is the first Black actress to play Batwoman in a live-action TV or film production. This is the second time that Batwoman would break new ground as a superhero series. As the series made history with Rose as the first LGBTQ superhero to lead a network TV show. Leslie also hails from the LGBTQ community, an aspect that The CW wanted to maintain with its new Batwoman lead. Leslie said in a statement following her casting announcement:

Quote:“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community.”

Leslie will don the cape and cowl when Batwoman returns to The CW for its second season in January 2021, airing Sundays. She will be playing Ryan Wilder, a new character created for the show following Rose’s surprise departure from the series. 

Showrunner Caroline Dries explained why the series decided against going the “soap opera” casting route of having a different actress play the same role originated by Rose, and instead created a new character, saying, “upon further reflection — and I think [Arrowverse EP] Greg [Berlanti] helped me make this call — he’s like, ‘I think we should just reboot Batwoman as a different character.'”

Dries added that this new character, who has been forced to live in a van with only a plant to keep her company, “is maybe not the right person at the time to be doing it, so that’s what makes it fun.”

There are no details yet about how the series will write Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane off the show. Though we know she won’t be killed off. So Batwoman is produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Jurassic World: Dominion director Colin Trevorrow has used the production halt wisely.

Jurassic World 3 was put on indefinite hiatus along with a lot of other large-scale productions amid the ongoing global situation, but with the announcement of filming commencing again very soon, things are looking up for the sci-fi blockbuster. Director Colin Trevorrow has even gone one step further, saying that the pause in production may have actually helped the movie.

Quote:"For many of us, Dominion was already the biggest creative challenge of our lives, before the lockdown. The shooting schedule really worked to our advantage - the first four weeks we put to film were mostly sequences with dinosaurs in them. So that allowed us to get a head start on VFX and workshop some of the newer elements without the pressure of a looming deadline."

It sounds like Colin Trevorrow and his crew have used the time well, getting a head start on the visual effects and no doubt tweaking what they had already achieved for the better. With strict health and safety guidelines now in place, Jurassic World: Dominion can finally begin filming again next month, and though Trevorrow sounds confident about the regulations keeping everyone safe, he does have some concerns about getting the most creatively out of such a rigid environment.

Quote:"I'm confident our guidelines will keep us safe," Trevorrow said of the new protocols. "The hard part will be constructing a creative environment within all the precautions. Once the cameras roll, we have to forget our world and live in the world of the movie. That may take some practice."

Despite these feelings of trepidation though, Trevorrow is eager to get back to the world of flesh-eating dinosaurs. As are the rest of the cast and crew. "I've been really moved by the way everyone has shown support for each other," the filmmaker said. "We're all fired up to get back to work. This is what we do, and we're all eager to get back out there and do it."

Jurassic World: Dominion has not had to adjust release. And so is still set to hit theaters on June 11, 2021. While it was rumored that Jurassic World: Dominion would be the last entry in the series, producer Frank Marshall recently cleared things up with a definitive "no" whilst promoting his new documentary Laurel Canyon recently. Marshall then offered a little more detail saying, "It's the start of a new era... The dinosaurs are now on the mainland amongst us, and they will be for quite some time, I hope."

Fallen Kingdom ends with a number of the creatures being smuggled off the island for a black-market auction which. Of course, ends terribly. With the dinosaurs now let loose upon the world. The likes of Neill's Alan Grant, Jeff Goldblum's Ian Malcolm, and Laura Dern's Dr. Ellie Sattler are being brought back into the fray to help stop the prehistoric beasts.

Far from the cameo that many had speculated, the original Jurassic Park trio will have substantial roles In Dominion, with Alan Grant actor Sam Neill saying recently that "We're all the way through the film, Jeff Goldblum, and me, and Laura [Dern]... They're dear friends and I'm delighted to be back working with them. And, more than that, we'll be living in the same joint for three or four months. So that's going to be fun. And everybody loves Chris and Bryce as well, so I think we'll be a very happy bunch."

So, you’ve brought someone home with the intention to “Netflix and chill”. But as you fire up your Netflix app on your iPad to find something to put on in the background, your “Continue Watching” row pops up. You try to quickly scroll past it. But it’s too late: You glance over at your would-be romantic partner. And notice that they have a horrified look on their face. Because they noticed that the three most recent things you watched were embarrassing as hell. So you sigh and do the only thing you can do in this terrible situation: as your would-be partner leaves. You both solemnly agree to never see each other again. Thanks a lot, Netflix.

But those were the old days. Now, Netflix has rolled out an update for users who access the app on Apple device that allows you to remove those pesky, unwanted movies and shows from your “Continue Watching” row, saving you untold amounts of future embarrassment and annoyance. Thanks a lot, Netflix!

The scenario I laid out above sounds like it could be the plot of a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode. But I have to imagine that a less extreme version of that has probably happened several times over the past decade. And putting the whole possible foiled romance angle aside. It just kinda sucks that when you try out a movie or a show. And end up tapping out because it wasn’t your tempo (I don’t blame you – life is short!). You’re forced to relive that decision time and time again as you scroll past that damned Netflix Continue Watching row… At least until you’ve watched enough other things that your past mistakes are shoved far enough down the row where they’re off the screen.

But now Netflix has rolled out a “remove from row” update for Apple device users. Deadline says that the feature. Which allows you to simply click on a viewed title and select that option, has “actually been available for some time”. But because the update to Apple devices is relatively recent. Many users are finally getting to implement it for the first time.

Now if we could just get Netflix to roll this easy option out to every device across the board. In the meantime. If you’d like to get rid of any annoying or embarrassing selections but aren’t accessing the app through an Apple device. You can make changes to your viewing history using an internet browser.

Ray Fisher explains why he cannot speak freely against Joss Whedon and his alleged

Justice League actor Ray Fisher recently accused Joss Whedon, who took over directing duties from Zack Snyder for the 2017 cut of the film, of 'gross and unprofessional behavior on set'. Since then, fans have been clamoring for Fisher to provide evidence to substantiate his claims. During a recent Q&A video for Instagram, Fisher explained the legal issues that are stopping him from speaking more freely.

Quote:"I am still very much under contract and I am still very much under Non-Disclosure Agreement. So I've got to be very careful about what I say and how I say it. Otherwise I can get sued into oblivion. So just a disclaimer there. For the folks who were looking for more specifics in the moment right now, I'm sorry that I cannot give them to you in the moment right now."

"Just gotta make sure all your ducks are laid out in a row so you can go ahead and handle the situation appropriately so you don't end up being, outside of professionally liable, legally liable for anything that could be litigious or whatever that would be. This will take some time, we will get it done, we will win, and then we'll be able to move on in the world. That's it."

There are those who are claiming Ray Fisher is making these assertions on social media to get attention. Fisher addressed such claims directly, insisting he has no interest in getting famous for the wrong reasons.

Quote:"Keep the clout. Keep the fame. I'd be happy going doing theater in the mountains of Oregon in obscurity, you know what I mean? I'm fine without that. I've often said, if this thing is the only thing I'm blessed to do, I'd be fine with that because what is going to be a wilder process than what this has been?"

"I've talked about Hollywood a lot in the recent weeks. So for some of you guys what I said last week probably is not a massive surprise. It just takes, it's going to take people being specific about their experiences in order to get things changed....If Hollywood is this or that and there's a bad stigma around it, well who in it specifically is giving it that bag stigma? Let's go ahead and deal with that and then you can actually begin to change the entire thing right? Talking about it in generalities is not helpful, it's not helpful."

"If it makes you feel any better. I'm feeling optimistic about the whole situation because I know at the end of the day. Regardless of what it is that I'm able to say or not say in this moment right now. There's no way that all this stuff does not come to light in some capacity. There's no way."

Fisher concluded his remarks on a hopeful note, promising the fans who have supported him throughout the ordeal that the details of the entire matter will be brought to light in time. Perhaps we'll learn more about Joss Whedon and his alleged abuse on the set of Justice League in the near future.
